The Three Brothers

Once upon a time, there was a small village. There lived an old man. He had three sons. The two elderly brothers were handsome but cruel. However, the youngest was a dwarf, but he was kind and always willing to help others.
One day, they all set out on their journey together. They walked for a while, and came to an ant-hill. The two elderly brothers wanted to pull it down to frighten the ants. But the little dwarf said, “ Let the poor things enjoy themselves. I will not suffer you to trouble them.”
So on they went, and came to a lake where many ducks were swimming about. The two senior brothers wanted to catch them. But the little dwarf said, “ Let the poor things enjoy themselves. You should not kill them.”
Next they came to a bees’ nest and there was so much honey in it. The two elderly brothers wanted to light a fire to kill the bees, so as to get the honey. But the dwarf held them back and said, “ Let them enjoy themselves. I cannot let you burn them.”
At length, they came to a castle and found that all the creatures there were of marble. A witch suddenly came out, and said to them, “ By set of sun, he who could pass the following trials on the three tablets would save the whole kingdom and marry the princess. However, he who failed them would become a marble, too. ” Then, she disappeared and left three tablets. The first tablet said, “In the wood, you have to find out five thousand pearls under the moss.” The eldest brother tried but he failed. He turned out to be a marble. Then, it’s the same with the second brother and he also became a marble. At last came to the little dwarf’s turn. The king of the ants came to help him, with five thousand ants, and he easily passed it.
And the second tablet said, “ You have to find out the key of the princess’s bed-chamber in the big lake.” Here came a flock of ducks and they dived down to bring the key to him. He passed it again.
Finally, the third task was to collect six thousand tubs of honey. Then came the queen of the bees and she collected all the honey in her bee kingdom to help his savior, the dwarf.
In the end, the youngest brother passed the three trials and he disenchanted the spell to marry the princess. Then, they lived a happy life forever.
