(Bob Bowman)

Rotate your head in line with your body.

Try to take your breath with one goggle in the water.  If your head is in right position, then there will be bow wave form about your head, and you actually take your breath with full mouth inside that bow wave.  If both goggles shown, then it's "over rotate".  Just to make one goggle showing then your head and body move together.

What kind of breathing pattern swimmers should use?

They should have varity of patterns to deal with different situations. The younger swimmers should use bilateral breathing.  When you get older, you will be wanting more air, and you also would like to have more rotation on your strokes.  So, it's advantageous then to breathe on one side more than once.

 Supplement:

I myself tried this technique for the first time on Monday (2010.1.24) swimming 500 meters.  I often got little water in my mouth as I tried to breathed with one goggle in the water.  But generally, it is not a difficult technique as long as the swimmer pays attn to it.  However, to breathe in the bow wave of head, it might take more practice to make the breath more smooth and without taking water.  Perhaps little water in the mouth was expected when this technique employed.
