Gelato Coffee~

GELATO

Coffee Rush is pleased to serve gelato at our cafés. Made fresh daily,  use natural and authentic Italian gelato flavors purchased from Aromi D’Italia. They are made with fresh fruit or other ingredients such as chocolate (pure chocolate, flakes, chips, candies, truffles, etc.), nuts, small candies, sweets, or cookies.

In Italian, gelato means ice cream. The term comes from the word freeze or frozen. However, to call a frozen dessert ice cream in Canada, it must have certain characteristics and meet specific guidelines. For example, to be ice cream, the product should have at least 10% butterfat. Most ice cream on the market contains up to 18%. The regular gelato we serve at Coffee Rush contains 4 to 8% fat, while the fruit flavors, which are water-based, contain less than 1% fat. Less fat does not mean less taste. Because of the lower butterfat content, gelato is not frozen as solidly as ice cream. Therefore, it melts in your mouth faster, and you get the intensity of the flavor immediately.

Plus, you’ll find that gelato has a much higher density than ice cream. You make ice cream by mixing cream, milk, and sugar together and then adding air. Manufacturers add air to ice cream because it nearly doubles the quantity of the product. It also tends to cut the quality in half. No air is added to gelato. And, at Coffee Rush, we pasteurize and then cool our gelato down. All this produces a higher quality dessert with a richer, creamier taste.
