FAMILY HOLIDAYS
On the 17th of June (Sunday) the year﹐Americans celebrated “Father‘s Day.” ﹐A month
earlier﹐on May 14th ﹐also a Sunday﹐they had a celebration for “Mother’s Day.” These are not official holidays which require formal ceremonies or the participation days set aside every year to honor all fathers and mothers.
Mother’s day in Taiwan is the same as that in the U.S.－on the second Sunday of May.
“Father’s Day.” However﹐is on August 8th ﹐when read aloud in mandarin﹐this date sounds like “baba﹐” which mean “father.”
The cultural similarities between Americans and Chinese are rather striking. Both have developed a social structure based on the family﹐and thoughtful people in both cultures
have come to the conclusion that parents and children should respect and honor one another. The differences are also quite obvious: while in the U.S. both Father’s Day and
Mother’s Day had their beginnings in Christian churches secular﹐for the Chinese they are purely secular and have no connection to any religious worship.
To be more specific Mother’s day in America was observed for the first time in Philadelphia Pennsylvania in 1908﹐when a social worker named Anna May Jarvis
got the idea of honoring all mothers on s special day every year. Father’s Day was first
observed on June 19﹐1910 at Spokane﹐Washington﹐where the local YMCA and the
Spokane Ministerial Association persuaded city officials to set aside a Sunday to “honor thy father.” The idea had come from a housewife﹐Mrs. John Bruce Dodd﹐who was inspired by the selfless sacrifices of her own father.
Whatever the origin﹐these special days for fathers﹐ mothers and children in America
And Taiwan are important reminders to us how much the society has changed. Family members are no longer as close to one another－my father﹐for example﹐is in Taiwan and
I am in the U.S. It is almost impossible for us to communicate with our closest relatives as often as people of a few generations ago did﹐even though we have more technological devices to do so .
So ﹐I believe it is important to observe these special family days－especially Father’s
Day this month in Taiwan －by expressing affection and gratitude sacrifice in nurturing and educating. “one most remember that source while drinking the water﹐”
Yin shui si yuan as the Chinese saying goes.
