Andre24 - Christmas

I met Andre’s sister Gina (not a real sister by blood. She was his very good friend so he called her sister) and her family. She has a handsome husband and 3 beautiful kids. They and Andre are neighbors too so they look after each other and meet often. I am a shy person so when I was with them I was usually quiet. I thought that Gina was pretty cool that she had a mind of her own. Her kids were funny but not naughty. They loved Andre. They jumped on him whenever they saw him. Although I tended to be invisible with them, I liked hanging out with them. However, it felt weird when I went out with Andre, Gina, and the kids because they were all black and I was the only one with different color. The picture looked as they were a family and I was an outsider. So I always grabbed Andre’s hand when we all went out together. I saw people’s funny look at us. ^_^

It was gonna be Christmas. Andre family heard that I was there so they decided to have the Christmas at his house. Andre said that they had never made it at his house before. I felt funny that the whole family came for me. Andre had to work on Christmas so he left me alone at home to wait for the family. I was nervous to death! I had never met any of them, and I had to act like a host?! I’m shy, remember?! Yes, I did talk to his mother on the phone once, but it doesn’t mean anything! Besides, I wanted to leave a good impression to them too!

After my anxious waiting, the door bell rang. I opened the door with a bumping heart. There was a lady and a little boy. I recognized her because I saw her pictures. “Hi, Mrs. Williams!! I’m Lillian!”It was Andre’s mother. I was glad that she was the first one that arrived because I felt more comfortable with her than with other families that I didn’t know. She was still very friendly, and told me that the little boy was her son Terry. “Son? The boy looks too young to be your son!”I did not tell her my question because I didn’t want to be rude. Besides, I remembered that before I came to America, Andre told me that his mother adopted a boy. I guessed that the boy was adopted.

I helped Andre’s mother prepare things. She brought some portable tables on the truck. She told Terry to help take them in. I was surprised that she wanted the 8y/o“little”boy to do the heavy work. I went out to help, and she told me that Terry could handle it. I was very surprised, but I insisted to help. More and more families came, and soon it got crowded at Andre’s house. I was the new egg in the group. It was really difficult for me to remember who was who!

When other families came, Andre’s mother had to introduce me and them. When she introduced me, she said, “this is Lillian, Andre’s girlfiend…”She quickly looked at me and said, “oh no, fiancée,”then she gave me a cute blink. I wondered whether she was hinting me that Andre was not ready to settle down…
