Easy to Learn Cantonese Chapter One:
(《Easy To Learn Cantonese》系列的首三章教授的句子分別是「我愛你」、「再見」、「對唔住」。在香港人的日常對話中,這三句說話時常由英語取替。)
About the video:
When the acoustic acting-out of language is under the context of language learning, it creates a mirror effect between the interlocutors in teaching-and-learning process of verbal enunciation. For example, when the teacher teaches the enunciation of the sentence “I Love You”, the student will respond by repeating the enunciation of “I Love You.” Together with the mirror effect, the meaning the sentence signifies has been eliminated and only the enunciation and the gesture of the speaker have been left behind. The enunciation of the teacher contains a signal of certainty and demands a learning behavior. The enunciation of the student contains a signal of lack of confidence and it requires for a certainty from the teacher.
The making of EASY TO LEARN CONTONESE Chapter 1: I Love You is based on the same concept regarding the interesting relationships between the meaning and the enunciation of a language, and the teaching and learning process of a certain language. During my residency in P.S.1 Contemporary Arts Center, originally a public school in Queen, New York City, I conducted 400 one-to-one Cantonese classes in my studio to teach visitors the Cantonese enunciation of “I Love You”. At the end of each class, I recorded the pronunciation of every student into a five-second video.
(The sentences taught in first three chapters of Easy to Learn Cantonese were “I Love You”, “Bye Bye”, and “Sorry”, respectively. In the daily communication of people in Hong Kong, these three sentences are usually spoken in English. )
