About one year after the presentation of the sedan saw the light of the world as a successor of the "Strichacht Coupés a new Zweituerer on basis of the new middle class. The Design turned out in the comparison to the predecessor substantially more obligingly/pleasingly, since one had shortened the wheel base in the comparison to the normal sedan despite higher production costs by 85 mm. Thus one obtained very harmonious proportions in connection with the more strongly bent disks and the lower roof system.
The in any case offered engine variants were unusual. Beginning of the seventies gave it with the predecessor model, which time life only with six cylinder machines one offered, to efforts, to also take up additionally the well-known 4,5-Liter-V8-Motor to the delivery program. Although these considerations had already very far progressed, one placed to the two new models with the long-known 2,8-Liter-Doppelnockenwellenmotoren suddenly rather some 2,3-Liter-Vierzylinder-Vergasermotor against the side. The historically more logical and sechszylindrige 250C already announced in the technical literature disappeared without comment in sinking. From today's view no bad decision was however safe, because both the 230C and the later 230CE sold themselves outstanding - obviously a large part of the buyers of the Coupé models did not put increased value on sporty road performances.
All Coupés corresponded in its equipment to the sedan variants with high order 280 and 280E, that means bumpers with chromium-plated corner pieces, additional trim inside and outside as well as rectangle headlights. The interior arrangement was clearly emphasized by until September 1979 exclusively in the Coupé used noble wood screens in whale nut root wood. After the model care also the Zebrano wood used into the 280er-Limousinen was here however only inserted. An additional and unusual detail of the Coupé models is the automatic bolting device of the front seat backrests by means of a negative pressure price increase. With running engine and closed doors the seat-backs are secured against moving forward. If the engine is turned off or if a door is opened, the bolting device is released.
