C3 Power Phrases (Get to the Point)
C3 Power Phrases (Get to the Point)
Good Evening, ladies and gentlemen:
My topic tonight is “Power Phrases”.
What is Power Phrases? Why do I choose the topic to be my C8?
Besides delivering speeches, there are many chances for us to communicate with others in our daily life. How to use power phrases to say what we mean, mean what we say, and then get what we want is a kind of art, and it’s also the skills of communication.
That’s why I choose a book “Power Phrases” to be the index of my C3.
Cuz the power of the language is so strong that even could change our life. Why don’t we say something good positive to influence the people around you?
Ok, let’s get the point.
What is Power Phrases?
It’s a short, specific, and targeted expression.
1.What’s that mean?
For example:
When I say….Dear Hans, Please turn off the light for us.
It’s an ask. Request. Order…whatever…
After Hans get the message, will he do it for us?
If the answer is yes, and he did it, it’s a power phrases.
If not, it’s depended on your skills.
2.How to use Power Phrases to say what we mean, and mean what we say, then get what we want?
Actually, it’s not easy, there’s a secret…”Beginning with the end in mind.”
What’s that mean?
Did everyone ever say sorry to other people in some situation?
When we did something wrong, make a apology, or asking for forgiven…
Asking for being forgiven is the end in our mind before saying sorry.
For the kids, they don’t know what the word “Sorry” means…
When my little cousin did something wrong, and his mom want to hit him..
He’ll say ”Mami, I love you” to instead of “Sorry”, and his mother always forgive him…”I love you.” Is the power phrase to the kids, though they don’t understand the meaning, either…but it’s useful.
Next time, when we do something wrong, why don’t we say…”I love you” or “Forgive me” to instead of “Sorry”
“I love you and forgive me” is the end in our minds before the beginning we want to say sorry.
3. Get the point. Concise, concrete and clear.
There are ah counter, timer in the Toastmaster clubs, it’s meaningful.
It’s available to avoid of those superfluous, such as “ah. Um..you know…”, those superfluous will decrease the power we express.
And trying to show the advantage and hide the drawbacks is also important…
Like……
Never say “I’m so nervious” on the stage…everyone knows…
Let me take some instances to explain how to show “simple, clear, and concrete expression.”
You need a report as soon as better.
You can say ”give me the report as soon as better.”
Or…”Write a 300-400 word, double space. And I need it by 3 P.M this Thursday”
The second one is much better.
4. Preserve the Goal
It’s the same of “Beginning with the end in mind.”
For example:
When you say “The meeting starts at 9 A.M.”è It will be done.
When you say “I’ll call you at 9 P.M”è It means that the guy will wait for the ring beside the phone…
How to use power phrases to express our feelings is so easy…
We could show our feeling and get the point, get what we want, it needs skills…
We should also care about the feelings of the people who listen to you…show our feelings and do not hurt others…
Just like when you speak, but the guy didn’t pay attention……
We could say…”You don’t pay attention.”
Or….it’s better to say ”I don’t feel heard, should I speak it clearly?”
We could express our feelings and influence the people around you through power phrases….Try our best to give the positive influence to the world…
