Fateless

Fateless (Lajos Koltai, 2005)

It has been not so fresh to be a story about Jews in German army’s concentration camp during World War II. “Sorstalanság” (Fateless), which wrote by Nobel Literature Prize winner Imre Kertész according to his personal experiences, except representing the Jews in Hungary, still has its unique vision worth adapting to this movie.

The leading character György was in the time of being a teen and facing the confusions of his own identity, except hesitating between his divorced parent’s families, and the meaning of being a Jew. Before finding an answer, György was sent to the concentration camps, viewing his people miserably treated over and over again and being used of living in fear gradually.

Differs from presenting the miserable of Jew only, concentration camp, in this story, didn’t make them united. As the rumor said, someone started to trade things, make one’s interests prior to all’s. Even György was told not to involve with this kind of behavior that make his character cheapen, the fragility of humanity still made his desire overcome reason. It’s also a kind of sadness of humans facing an extreme time.

As the first piece of the famous cinematographer Lajos Koltai, this story which comes from hometown appears more significant. Although the cold-toned frame makes audiences feel the melancholy and suffering as they experienced, but it also matches to the detached point of view of the film and avoids of being exaggerated by piling on the agony too much easily.

Fate finally appeared again, György was lucky enough to become one of the survivors. The experience made him understand his position deeply: not only a Hungarian, a Jew but also a human being with dignity. Rejecting the kind suggestion of the American soldier offered to him, he decided to go back to hometown, ignored that he has to face the difficulty of the ruling of communists. What important was he can finally enjoy the right of being with the people and things he loves.
