「和撒那」原來的意思，是「耶和華啊！請你拯救！」原出自舊約詩篇118篇25節。這是猶太百姓在病苦中，向其上帝呼求的聲音。到了新約時代，「和撒那」已經失去了原來的意義，而成為一種類似「榮耀啊！」的讚美歡呼聲。

約翰福音12:13 許多上來過節的人聽見耶穌將到耶路撒冷，就拿著棕樹枝出去迎接他，喊著說：「和撒那！奉主名來的以色列王是應當稱頌的！」
