KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Rugby Union (MRU) is still hoping for the country's rugby sevens squad to contribute a medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, although the Olympic Council of Malaysia has not placed any set target for the sport.

MRU president Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya admitted it was not easy for the squad to deal with great teams from countries like Hong Kong, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Philippines and China, but added that nothing was impossible.

"The players now need to keep their focus and prepare themselves for the Asian Games which is just a little more than a month away.

"The Sapporo Sevens Championship in Japan early next month will be the final preparation for the squad before heading to Jakarta," he said after a ceremony to handover rugby balls sponsored by Gilbert at Wisma OCM today.

Malaysia has been placed in group B with Japan, Taiwan and hosts Indonesia at the Asian Games which takes place from Aug 18 to Sept 2.....

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's Rugby is at its best today, said Malaysian Rugby (KRM) president, Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya.

Since the national 15 aside (15's) squad won the Division One Asian Rugby Championship (ARC) in May last year, followed by the historical gold medal win at the seven aside (7's) at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017), the national rugby had not looked back.

Shahrul said the dignity of the national rugby was lifted through various long and short term programmes designed by KRM in an effort to ensure the performance of the sport continued to improve.

It was clearly proven during the country's preparations for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, the 2018 ARC in April and currently, for the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang this August.

"After we won the 2017 ARC and the gold medal in KL2017, I said we have to improve standard and make an extraordinary preparations after this. We get the service of experts from New Zealand, we also sent the15's squad to train there for two weeks, as well as participate in a series of tournaments.....
