DCE

願獻身心為活祭;
Havergal

The Heart Of Giving

Read: 2 Corinthians 8:1-15

They first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us. –2 Corinthians 8:5

Bible In One Year:
2 Peter 1-3

When I visited Faith Academy in the Philippines, I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the staff. My hosts went out of their way to make certain I was comfortable and had everything I needed.

One day they took me shopping for gifts and souvenirs, and then drove many miles so that I could enjoy the Philippine countryside. On another occasion, a staff member took me up to the "Eagle's Nest," a hilltop from which I could see all of Manila, a city of 15 million people. It was an unforgettable sight! At week's end he gave up a whole day to take me to the island of Corregidor.

These were busy people, yet they freely gave their time to me. They are examples of what Paul was talking about in 2 Corinthians 8:5. The Macedonian believers generously supported Paul's ministry because they had already given themselves to the Lord.

A heart that has been given to God will overflow with selfless goodness to others. Just as Jesus gave Himself for us–becoming poor that we might become rich (2 Cor. 8:9)–so His disciples are to follow His example and freely give of themselves to serve others.

Let's commit ourselves to being as generous with our time and resources as the Lord has been with us. –DCE

Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love. –Havergal

The highest kind of giving comes from the depths of the heart.
