HARA-KILI

It’s my three sisters and me in Chinese traditional costumes. Before taking the picture, the photographer wanted us to have something in hand and adopt an elegant pose. They three got umbrellas, and I was given a Japanese wooden sword. I was sort of bewildered and thought to myself that, “ Why didn’t you give me a Chinese fan instead which better match my dress?” So I was a bit down in my mouth, thinking the photographer wasn’t professional at all for failing to notice that detail. Wanting to get out of studio sooner, I decided not to raise my question. I looked at the sword for seconds, smiling and then performing a fake Hara-kiri. (or Seppuku, literally “cutting the stomach.” It’s a Japanese word which means ritual suicide by disembowelment.) However, days later when receiving the photo, I changed my opinion to the photographer. Because he made me realize that it’s not the attires, poses or hairdos that counts, but “The Moment.”
