Translation:
Since my uncle left, it seemed that my aunt had paid more attention to Xiufen, and liked her even more. One day, she said to Xiufen, “You don’t look well, I’ll take you to a doctor and see what’s wrong with you. Then we’ll go have a prayer in a temple and stay overnight for a dream-telling.”
I was so delighted to hear about the dream-telling. I wanted to stay in a temple for a night and experience it, too. Sleeping in a female guest room and telling the fortune-teller what you dreamt, then he will explain your dreams in details, whether good or bad luck. I have never had dream telling in my life, so I urged to go. My aunt rejected, “You’re still a child, what do you want dream-telling for? I will only take Xiufen to the temple.” For that, I felt I was drifting away from Xiufen more and more.
My aunt bought some joss sticks, picked the freshest tangerines from our garden, and took Xiufen to the temple to have the dream-telling. After that, my aunt took her to a doctor. Leaving me alone at home, I couldn’t sleep well for the whole night. When Xiufen was back, I asked her immediately,
“You worshiped the gods and made a wish, right?”
She nodded her head, “Your aunt led me to the temple, and I worshiped a god and had fortune telling.”
“So what was it about?”
She took out the paper from her pocket and let me have a look, in which it wrote, “A book brings honors and wealth, a book brings elegant girl. Honors and wealth are immaterial, only marital love is essential.”
I was not really sure about the meaning of the poem. The first two sentences were from a classical poem, which did not have any direct relationship with Xiufen at all. The latter two, though I did not know their origins, were quite meaningful that they described Xiufen’s situation very well, and these two sentences were easy to understand also. Xiufen smiled wryly, “Totally wrong. What marital love do I have?”
“Well, your good days are coming. By the way, what did you dream?”
“I was feeling a little blurry the whole night and didn’t sleep well. I didn’t have a dream until dawn. In the dream, I lost my way in an empty room and couldn’t find a door. Finally I found one, but it was locked by a large nail and I failed to open it. I woke up as I started to panic. How can this be a propitious sign?”
