Lawrence（1885-1930）、與1929年諾貝爾文學獎得主 Thomas Mann（1875-1955）無庸贅言。Federico Garcia Lorca（1898-1936）是西班牙詩人劇作家，在西班牙內戰初期被弗朗哥屬下的法西斯黨人所殺，聲名因此大噪。希臘作家 Nikos Kazantzakis（1913-1960）自稱為尼采、柏格森、列寧、釋迦摩尼、與基督的信徒（！），著作包括《Zorba the Greek》與《The Last Temptation of Christ》。美國作家 Thomas Wolfe（1900-1938）則是《Look Homeward, Angel》一書作者。必須指出：VN 最後連舉兩個「湯馬斯」，熟悉他一貫戲謔手法的讀者不難看出這一人（man）一狼（wolf）恰成一對。
* * J.D. Salinger（1919-）是行藏神秘的美國作家，《The Catcher in the Rye》一書作者。 John Updike（1932-）是美國詩人小說家，著有《Rabbit Run》、《Rabbit Redux》、《Rabbit is Rich》、《Rabbit At Rest》「兔子」四部曲（後來又加上一個中篇〈Rabbit Remembered〉，收在《Licks of Love》書中），及《Bech: A Book》、《Bech is Back》、《Bech at Bay》「貝克」三部曲等。
