Autumn Moon over the Han Palace
Under the feudal system, the young, poor girls who were selected to serve in the palace left their family and home and lost their freedom. But they had to force themselves to seem cheerful, entertaining the palace by singing and dancing. Even though they were given a luxurious life with exquisite chambers, fine clothes, and gourmet food, their behavior had to be restrained and follow the rigid rules of that time. They were never to see their parents, let alone to have their own family or a lover.
This subject—young maids who worked for royal families in palaces—was explored in poems, stories, operas and theater pieces, and in this set of tunes composed by several pipa masters. This work is filled with a sorrowful voice that seems to come from deep in these young maids’ hearts, and expresses their yearning to meet with their parents on Mid-Autumn Holidays when surrounded by the endless exuberant feasts in the palace.
