Dear Hsing-Yi,

Thanks you very much for your letter. I received it several days ago. I was so happy and pleased that you wrote to me. I almost cried tears of joy. You are one of the sweetest things that has ever happened in my life to me .

When I wrote to you last time I was living away from home at school. I go to school just like you do only. I am going to college. College is the highest form of schooling in the United States. A person goes to college for four years, this is what I am doing.

At the moment , I am out of school for summer vacation. During the summer it is true that I stop studying but I do not stop working. This summer I am working trying to make lots of money so I will be able to send you money every month. I job I have is as a cook in a restaurant. I work many hours a week and many times I come home late at night.

You are probably wondering what I am like, especially since I start sending you money when I do not even know you. Well, to start off with I like animals, growing plants in my garden, and learning about people..

You see, that is why I agreed to help you, so you would not have to suffer so much and so your mother would not have to work so hard to support you. Another reason I decided to help you was so that I could learn about you, your life, and your country. Hopefully you will be able to learn about my country as well as learn to speak English.

I have a suggestion on how you can learn English faster and how I can help. I was thinking, if you could read my letters without having them translated, or before they were translated to see how well you do on your own. Then after you have done your own translating you could go to one of your teachers in your school and have him, or her, translate it with you. Another way in which I can aid? You in your learning English is for you to try and write to me in English the best you can. Then, if you want, I will correct your letters and send them back to you.

I guess the best way to learn a language is to practice it. Since I do not know anything about your language the best I can do is help you with mine.

Hsing-Yi, I have gotten so much out of your letter. I really enjoyed getting it. Your letter melt so much to me that now I feel that I love you, as one loves their best friend. Please write to me as often as you can.
I will do the same.

Love, Tom
