如何得知我們所處的銀河系的形狀呢？是否有漩渦臂？
我們可利用
觀測O,B 型恆星、HII 區或年輕的星團，可決定出太陽附近的漩渦臂的形狀。
觀測21cm的無線電波源(可觀測中性氫的分佈)與2.6 mm的無線電波源(可觀測CO 分子雲的分佈)，可決定整個銀河系的漩渦臂與銀核。
