Town of Hillsboro

Translated by SFT

When we rode by Town of Hillsboro Beach, FL on Saturday, we heard a young man across the street greeting us in Chinese, ‘Ni How’ ( How are you doing?). It’s Javier.  He was an international exchange student in Taiwan during 2003, so when he saw the flags in our bikes, he was excited. We are the first Taiwanese he has seen in this small town.

Javier asked us to take a break in his home.  He is the youngest commissioner in Florida and speaks fluent English, Spanish and Chinese.  To our amazement, once in a while, he would also say a couple of Taiwanese phrases.

Javier later visited Taiwan again in 2006 and 2009 for study and business, respectively. During his stay in Taiwan, he was deeply touched by the Taiwanese people for their hospitality and friendliness.  Therefore, he was going to return the favor to us! Thank you, my fellow countrymen, we were nicely treated here because you were nice to visitors there.

To our surprise, behind Javier’s house lies a big beach.  White sands stretch out to meet the clean, blue ocean. It was love at first sight.  Javier invited us to have BBQ the following afternoon. Upon hearing BBQ, Yi’s eyes sparkled, the images of shrimps, seafood, beef, and desserts coming to her mind.  To me, the scenic beach was definitely a plus.  We did not want to miss our plane, but we would also like to meet Javier’s family and to hear his sequel of funny stories during his stay in Taiwan learning Chinese.  Thus we decided to speed up to the Miami International Airport and to have everything packed up ready over there for the Monday afternoon flight to Turkey.  We then returned to Hillsboro Beach to spend Sunday afternoon with Javier’s family, enjoying delicious food, freestyle swimming and cool surfing.  What an excellent leisure time we had before we left America.
