Pleural effusion means there is some fluid in the pleural cavity surrouding the lung. It could be a sign of cancer -- cancer cells can go to the lung from the breast. However, other diseases such as chest infection ( eg tuberculosis) can also cause pleural effusion. A CT scan of chest may help differentiate different causes. Other tests, eg sputum culture and TB culture, may help. If the diagnosis is still not sure after doing all these tests, bronchoscopy or biopsy could be considered. If you have further questions, you can ask your mother`s doctor. You have the right to ask questions, and he has the responsibiltiy to explain to your monther and you. Never feel afraid to ask your mother`s doctor.2008-03-08 02:51:28
