Ahead of his UK return to renaissance at Wild in the Country, May 1st, we grabbed a few moments to ask him a few questions

There's a long history of DJ double acts: The Chemical Brothers, Slam, Fabio & Grooverider, and more recently 2 Many DJs. But the most legendary pairing of DJs ever has to be Sasha and Digweed. Individually they are amongst the biggest and best DJs in the world. Together no-one can even come close to touching them. Sasha's DJing career started at the seminal Manchester club The Hacienda before he went on to make a name for himself with a residency at the renowned and much loved Shelley's in Stoke. From there he moved to Renaissance, and it was here that he met John Digweed. The two instantly hit it off and so began the partnership that would define them both as DJs.

A crucial part of the process by which they became the world's biggest DJ duo was Renaissance The Mix Collection Volume 1, the compilation the pair mixed in 1994. It was a groundbreaking selection, mixing Leftfield with Digweed's own productions as Bedrock, Italian techno with vocals, Moby with trance (before trance was a dirty word). It's still one of the best compilations ever committed to record - hugely varied and far-reaching - and it's hard to believe that it's a decade old. It's certainly because of The Mix Collection Volume 1 that Sasha and Digweed were offered one of the most coveted residencies of all time - at the Twilo club in New York.

Whilst Sasha and Digweed never exactly went their separate ways, demand necessitated that they become more independent, Sasha taking time off to make his Airdrawndagger album, Digweed concentrating on Bedrock. It's a lot longer since they played at Renaissance, making their appearance alongside each other at Wild In The Country something of a spiritual homecoming, not to mention one of the essential club dates of the summer. In 1989 De La Soul sang that 'three is the magic number'. They were wrong: it's two. Like ying and yang, you need two halves to complete the whole.

How was the Miami Winter Music Conference this year?

"I really enjoyed it. John Digweed and I played a party at this club called Mansion in Miami. It was the first time we'd played together for about six months. We were talking about how we're looking forward to Wild In The Country because it's been so long since we played at Renaissance together."

How does it feel to be playing Renaissance, the club where you defined your sound, again?

"It feels good because it's been ten years since we mixed Renaissance The Mix Collection Volume 1. Along with Shelley's it's the club that has had the most influence on me."

How have you changed musically since mixing Renaissance The Mix Collection Volume 1 in '94?
自從94年這張專輯發行之後你在音樂上有怎麼樣改變嗎?
"Well it was ten years ago and dance music has moved on. Back then it was just like throwing records together in an eclectic way. About four or five years ago it went to this really dark place. But recently I've been listening back to sets like that, that we used to play, and it's given me the confidence to play vocals and eclectic records again. It's given me the confidence to be less purist."

What keeps you DJing?

"The idea of keeping the music moving forward. That, and taking the sound around the world."

Who are the hottest new producers/DJs coming through?

"I was a bit burnt out a year or so ago, but I'm really into music again at the moment. There's loads of great music out there. James Zabiela is really going places and production-wise James Holden is going from strength to strength."
一年前左右我覺得沒有那麼熱衷,但現在我對他們的音樂還滿入迷的。James Zabiela已經是個很棒的DJ了,製作方面James Holden則越來越驚人了。
What's the best record in your box at the moment?
你現在箱子裡擺的最正的唱片是那一張?
"The Tiefschwarz mix of Kinda New by Spektrum. That was the record of Miami for me. Tiefschwarz are great producers. I really like that punk house sound, It's got loads of energy and it's really dirty."

"Audio Bullys: I've never seen them play. James Zabiela of course. And Infusion. Everything they did in Miami got a great reception."

Why do you make such a good team?
為什麼你們這麼有默契?
"It just feels right when were in the DJ booth together. We respect and trust each other and that gives us this comfort zone. I find it very hard to analyze either John or myself without sounding like a twat. But I will say this: there's something that John does that's pure science. He builds energy by mixing tracks that nobody's heard. Which is great because when I go I can throw a curve ball and go off in a different direction."
當我們一起在DJ 台上那感覺就是很正,我們尊敬且信任彼此,所以我們都感到很舒服。這聽起來可能有點像娘們但我也很難去解釋。但我會說,John的做法是很科學的,他把沒人聽過的歌混接成很有活力的曲子,這很棒因為換成我時,我可以像丟出變化球一樣從不同的角度切入。

2004.5.1這天和我朋友DAN兩人在倫敦坐了五個小時的車,終於到了位於英國中部靠近伯明罕的一個郊外地方.
整體來說,這次Renaissance的場地雖然沒有來的比HOMELANDS來的大,
不過相較之下今年HOMELANDS可沒有JOHN DIGWEED和SASHA兩個人哦!
今年Renaissance的OUTDOOR PARTY: "WILD IN THE COUNTRY"分成三個區域,分別是:

不過自從一到場地之後,我們就差不多都呆在WILD ARENA沒有離開過.
雖然MISSED掉開頭暖場的Marcus James,不過從8:30開始由DAVE SEAMAN上場,不愧是具有國際水準的DJ呀,
果然配合著時段慢慢的把氣氛帶上來,不過中途又跑去聽一下WALLY LOPEZ和從新加坡ZOUK CLUB來的Aldrin,
兩個人都放的不錯~尤其是WALLY LOPEZ,帶著TRIBAL FEEL,氣氛帶的很HIGH哩~
不過看看手錶該是回去聽JAMES ZABIELA上場的時候啦!
自從上次和小番茄在THE END聽過他表演之後就沒有再聽過他的現場.
這次一聽~呀!!!!!!!!!~~~~~~~~~他實在放太HIGH啦.很重的BASS LINE,
帶著DEEP DARK的感覺,中間在穿插幾首HOUSE,尤其是他的刷牒技巧和效果器
使用真的是把氣氛帶到最高點呀~!!
BREAKS BEAT DJ首推~!
重點戲終於上場了,一開始由SASHA先上場,他和DIGWEED好像是一人放一小時放到6am吧.依照慣例,
他一開始就接了Invisble - star,讓現場氣氛充滿濃濃的MELODY PROGRESSIVE FEEL,全場的氣氛霎時帶到最高點..
不過唯一比較可惜的是,因為wild arena的音樂實在太好了,所以卻忘記了在shadow arena演出的INFUSION!!
還記得JOHN DIGWEED和SASHA在RENAISSANCE的PARTY同台演出已是十年前的事情,在這十年後這兩位PROGRESSIVE
的大老又再次的在RENAISSANCE的PARTY上同台打碟,依舊不變的是,他們仍然是世界DANCE MUSIC的Leader>>>
