The starting point for this hike along the steep slopes of the Mättenbergs can be reached, with the airial cableway Grindelwald – Pfingstegg, in five minutes. From the mountain station at Pfingstegg the trail will gently descends down to a hut on the Rubiweid. The smooth walls of the Mättenberg jut out to the right of you. A wooden footbridge takes you over a small gorge and onto the rocky remains of an earlier avalanche. Having crossed the remains of the Breitlouwina avalanche, the trail heads on up towards the Milchbach restaurant on Halsegg. Halsegg is a lateral moraine of the upper Grindelwald Glacier. The trail to the right will lead you directly along the clefted glacier and then down through the woods to the base of the valley. Now follow the dirt track over the glacier stream and up to the hotel Wetterhorn (to Grindelwald another 1 hr.) At the hotel Weterhorn you will find an old cable cabin. It was once part of the Wetterhorn cableway, dated 1908, and world wide the first suspension cableway.
