 Division dreams Yanked away
Despite loss, Boston holds one-game edge in Wild Card
 By Ian Browne / MLB.com
BOSTON -- In the most awkward of scenes, the Red Sox watched the Yankees celebrate the American League East title on their field late Saturday afternoon and didn’t have the slightest bit of remorse over it.
For the Red Sox are more preoccupied by their own situation, which thanks to the Indians, is a lot better than it could be.
While the Yankees were upending the Red Sox, 8-4, the Indians suffered a 4-3 loss to the White Sox.
In simplest terms, what that means is that Sunday will not be the last day the Red Sox play baseball in 2005.
With a victory over the Yankees, the Red Sox will be the American League Wild Card entry for the third year in a row and will move on to the Division Series against the White Sox on Tuesday in Chicago. In fact, the Red Sox could clinch that trip to Chicago even with a loss if Cleveland also loses to the White Sox.
If the Red Sox lose and the Indians win, those two teams will meet at Fenway Park on Monday at 7 p.m. ET in a one-game playoff to determine the Wild Card.
"We all know the circumstances," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "It’s a little unique. We have to prepare to pack to leave [for Chicago], because we expect to win. If we don’t, then you do whatever you’re supposed to do. Let’s play the next day or watch the scoreboard. I’m aware of all that. But I just think it’s so much easier to do what you’re trying to do by just focusing on playing the game at hand. That’s how we’ll succeed."
The man who didn’t succeed for the first time in quite a while was veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. Pitching on three days’ rest, Wakefield (five innings, seven hits, seven runs, three homers) was roughed up from the outset.
As some fans were still settling into their seats, Gary Sheffield pummeled a Wakefield fastball over the Green Monster for a two-run homer that gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead before Randy Johnson threw his first pitch of the day.
Wakefield was asked why he strayed from his patented knuckleball on that offering.
"I tried to get him off something, tried to throw him a fastball in, maybe. It didn’t work," said Wakefield. "The ball was down and in, but ..."
Still, the Red Sox looked primed in the early innings to match the Yankees swing for swing, even against the Big Unit. Manny Ramirez hit a titanic homer in the bottom of the first -- the first of two he would hit on the day -- a two-run, two-out blast that sailed way over the Green Monster and toward the Mass.
Pike.
But Wakefield, much to his chagrin, gave the two runs right back, which was symbolic of the kind of day he had. After posting a 1.99 ERA in September,Wakefield’s first start in October was one he’d like to give back.
If the Red Sox can qualify for the postseason, the knuckleballer has at least one more chance to erase the sour taste of Saturday.
"I’d like another one. I’m very disappointed in myself today," said Wakefield.
Early on, the Red Sox had their chances against Johnson. The biggest one came in the second, when they loaded the bases with two outs for Edgar Renteria.
The shortstop worked the count to 3-1, and the Fenway faithful was salivating at the chance to roar when David Ortiz stepped to the plate. But Johnson battled back and struck Renteria out on 94-mph heater.
Despite the lost opportunities, the Red Sox jacked Johnson’s pitch count up to 84 after just four innings. Without question, Johnson’s biggest inning was the fifth, when he retired Boston’s No. 2-3-4 hitters (Renteria, Ortiz and Ramirez) on just six pitches. From there, the Big Unit found himself, and the Red Sox didn’t stand much of a chance.
"We had some chances on him. We had his pitch count up high early," said Francona. "He looked like he showed some frustration on the mound at times. He made a real good pitch to Edgar to end the inning. You don’t know how many chances you’re going to get against him."
As it turned out, not enough.
But the Red Sox were able to shower off Saturday’s defeat pretty quickly and eye a huge contest on Sunday.
Curt Schilling pitches for Boston. The Yankees counter with Jaret Wright.
"We control our own destiny," said Ortiz. "Our destiny is going to be dependent on what we do [Sunday]."
But at least the Red Sox know that Game No. 162 is not their finale.
