練太極拳

Forty years ago, I started to practice Tai Chi Quan. My teacher was a sixty-year-old veteran, whose square face and strong muscles made him look as though he was in his forty’s. He practiced Yang style Tai Chi Quan, teaching us how to move and how to defend ourselves.

Now I am learning Tai Chi Quan from a young, kind Master Jian Xin. Master Jian Xin came from Chung Tai Chan Monastery in Taiwan. He doesn’t talk too much, but he smiles a lot. Bending his knees, straightening his spine, he moved his legs forward in a straight line. Once awhile, he faced to the east, south, west and north…etc., However, his head remained steady, his eyes concentrating, his arms opening and closing in sync with his breath. The practice would build up our legs, as we held the whole bodies as strong as the root holds a tree.

Basically, Tai Chi symbolizes Yin and Yang in the universe. The energy of our blood goes through our bodies as water smooths stones in river, making us flexible and natural. New research shows that Tai Chi Quan exercises strengthen the immune system. Practicing Tai Chi Quan, one of the martial arts, can alleviate the psychological tension and anxiety. Long-term practice of Tai Chi exercise slows aging and improves balance control, flexibility, and cardiovascular function

I hadn’t practiced Tai Chi Quan for a longtime. When I began again, I caught up quickly. I will continue practicing it. Just like playing some musical instruments when we were young, we keep the skill deep in our minds and never forget it.
