The Racoons 浣熊

I could hear the noisy sounds. Running, jumping and scratchig came from the attic. Sometimes I found a shell at the front door or a dead bird in the backyard about one year ago.
When the noisy sound roared again, I picked up a flashlight and climbed the ladder to the attic. Strenching out my head, I was surrounded in the terrible darkness. Suddenly, I saw two sharp blue lights, shooting, moving, appoaching me. I didn’t know what it is. With a flashlight in one hand and a camera in other hand, I pushed the botton, without hesitation, frightened, took one, two, three, and four pictures. And then I slid quickly to the ground as a smoke in the sky. John helped me insert the memory card into the computer.
Finally, two racoons, one big and the other a little, appeared in the pictures, having grayish-brown fur, and black, mask-like facial markings and a bushy, black-ringed tail. It looked just like what you saw in the movies. A little one stood by it’s foot, a little pitiful, shy and cute, and face me. Behind it, the mother racoon, big as a cat, crossed the log, and run to the light. Undoubtedly it wanted to protect it’s baby. I remembered that the big shadow was then moving away. It’s said that racoons usually sleep in the day time and active at night. They are very wild. Sometimes they are dangerous to people. they would run toward the light, and can spread diseases. They are rare. We, awfully, worried and didn’t know how to catch them. We had thought about calling the Animal Protection Bureau. I heard from the news, even if you want to own them, you need to apply for a license in California. After taking those pictures, I began to miss them. The camera light scared them away. I have not heard any sound from the attic after that day.
Mr.Chang, a carpenter, helped us to fix the exterior siding of the house and changed the wood, replacing the broken vent. He wanted me to check again if they were still in there. I went to the attic again, pounded the wood to make sound aloud, to scare them away intentionally. I had prayed the Sutra and had pulled down the attic ladder to make another escape route for them. I also put a racoon stuffed animal with some fruit in it, but still there was no sign of them.
My attic neighbors-the racoons with a cute face, came from the wood and gave us a one-month shock ! they have gone!
Last night, I heard a heavy scraching sound on the ground, and cat’s ceremic bowl was being knocked around. I was so frightened that couldn’t go out to look. What if someone was breaking in?
“Look!” John yelled, “It’s the racoon. It has come back!”
He turned on the yard light and pulled the shutter open, watching through the window screen. The racoon had broken the plastic birdfood bag from the jar. And pulled it outside with its claw. A very hungry animal was outside in the dark. It didn’t care whether someone was watching or not; it just eagerly ate the birdseeds. The racoon had grown bigger than we saw it since the year before.
“Don’t bother it”, I said, taking pictures of it. The light was still not bothering it at all. It concertrated on eating. Because the battery was weak, when I went back to get an another camera, but the racoon had already gone.
