Iris Chang's Funeral

According to the newspaper I read, Iris Chang's funeral was held on last Sunday. No one was 100% sure why did Iris, a successful, young and famous Historian writer, chose to end her life so soon. One of the common guesses was because she was suffering from her researches for the massacre in Nanking and the like. I guess it's not just that.

For some reasons, I believe people who commit suicide...... well...... Sorry if I offend anyone, but I believe they are true to their feeings. I see a lot of people try to escape from their feelings by fooling themselves or numb their senses. What they are trying to escape from is a time to deal with themselves alone. Yes, suicide is not a way to deal with the problem. It's not a responsible act. Nonetheless, people who have thought of commiting suicide do come to a point when they feel the sorrow for themselves and feel the pain. I think the way to prevent from commiting suicide is not to escape from the thinking of it, but to know how to deal with the feeling.

Death is not a welcome topic, especially among Asians. We are prohibited to even speak the word during New Years and birthdays. But as time goes by, I am beginning to think that dealing with the idea of death is part of our responsiblities. It's just similar to the case when we go for a long trip: we plan ahead, pay for fares, settle things and leave notes to the ones left behind. It's just a long trip that we are not expected to come back.
