         The Girl from Zervo

Down on the broad plain,on the beautiful plain,

The town’s fair maids gathered to build a monastery.

The pigeons carried, the sparrows built and

As they built and when they finished, they danced.

The blondes danced in front, the dark-eyed behind

And in the center danced the girl from Zervo.

Her sleeves gleamed and her collars flashed and

The king passed hunting for hares

With sixty-two hounds and forty-two yokes.

He held his horse reined and watched the dance:

If I were not ruler,if I were not king,

I’d go and grasp the hand of the girl from Zervo

Who has red lips like a wild cherry,

Who has languid eyes and laughs like sugar,

Who exhausts all hearts and drives young men mad.
