1970，英國樂團The Beatles正式宣佈解散，原因複雜，而有許多人認為John Lennon新娶的老婆Yoko Ono ( 小野洋子 ) 是造成散夥的重要因素，當然也就不喜歡她，甚至公然稱她為Jap ( Japanese的簡稱，有貶抑之意。)、或是Chink ( 可能是出自China這個字，是歧視華人或亞裔人士的稱謂，通常被翻成「中國佬」、「中國豬」。)、Yellow等等。Yoko Ono可非等閒之輩，從年輕時即和人私奔，之後又結過兩次婚，主要從事藝術工作，而作法怪異前衛，或因此深深的吸引著John Lennon，倆人新婚蜜月的「床上和平運動」( 見延伸閱讀 )，不知是否即為Yoko Ono的點子。

披頭合唱團散夥後，團員各自發展，John Lennon則是繼續搞他在之前 (1969) 即成立的樂團The Plastic Ono Band。而此首《Imagine》是John Lennon於1971稍早在他英格蘭伯克郡的家中所寫，之後收錄在由Lennon個人掛名與歌曲同名的專輯中。1980，在Lennon遭受槍擊身亡前不久，他才承認這首歌部份歌詞的靈感，是來自於他老婆Ono的作品，而Ono也終於在2017獲得了她在此曲的共同寫作權的認定。

此曲在告示牌熱門排行榜雖然只獲得第3名，英國第6 ( 而在Lennon被槍殺的1980再度進榜登冠 )，卻得到葛萊美名人堂奬及進入搖滾名人堂的500首歌曲中。2004，滾石雜誌將此曲列在「歷年來500首最佳歌曲」的第3名。此曲也是Lennon個人歌曲中最暢銷的一首。

歌名是「想像」，歌曲大意是想像地球上沒有種族、宗教的對立，沒有戰爭和財富、資源的搶奪，應該就是「烏托邦」的世界吧！在現實社會中無法達到的理想，有時藉著幻想自我催眠一下，好像也還不錯。
