IV. Process & Mailing Address

1.      Apply Online

2.      Disclaimer, Signature and Fee Payment Form
The nonrefundable $75.00 application fee can be paid by international money order or check payable to UC REGENTS

3.      Three letters of recommendation – At least two letters from college or university faculty who can address your previous academic performance and future promise as a graduate student are preferred for all applicants and are essential for Ph.D. applicants. Letters from school or school district administrators may also provide useful information. Letters from administrators with advanced degrees are often quite useful but should not substitute for letters from academia. We recognize that in some cases (e.g., extended time since last degree) it may not be possible to request letters from university faculty—when this is the case ask for guidance regarding your options for other recommenders. Letters are normally sent directly to the Graduate School of Education by the recommender. If you prefer to include letters in your packet, they should be in sealed envelopes with the writer’s signature across the sealed flap. The recommendation form that is included with the application needs to be included with each letter. It is a good idea to check periodically to see whether the letters you have requested have arrived.

4.      Two Official Transcripts – Official transcripts must be provided from each school you have attended. If your degree has not been conferred but is expected before you begin your graduate program, you may submit a transcript prior to the completion, but must provide a conferred transcript as soon as possible after completion.

5.      Statement of Purpose

6.      GRE Scores – The GRE exam is a requirement to the M.A. and Ph.D. programs. It is not required for the M.Ed. or ASC. Your scores must be provided through the testing facility. The minimum score acceptable is 1100 in a combined score of verbal and quantitative. School Psychology applicants must provide the Psychology Subject Scores as well as the general exam scores. Be sure to list the GRE institution code for UCR R4839.

7.      TOEFL Scores – International students must submit TOEFL scores that are not more than 2 years old. The scores must be submitted from the testing facility.

8.      Supplementary Fellowship Information - The form shows a January 5 deadline, however, students who wish to be considered for financial assistance should complete the form even if the deadline is past. If funds become available, or have not all been allocated when your file is reviewed, you may be considered for a fellowship or other financial assistance.

9.      International applicants must complete and return the International Student Confidential Financial Statement.

Statement of Purpose

Your statement of purpose should include the goals and objectives you wish to achieve that are related to your graduate studies. You should include your specific areas of interest in the graduate program you are applying for. Answer the three questions on the form to the best of your ability. If you need to attach a second sheet, please do so and place a comment “please see attached” on the form.

Please state your specific interests with respect to the program to which you are applying. The following information should be included in this statement:

1.      Your intended area of specialization, career objectives, and research interests and experience.

2.      A brief occupational resume if any significant period has elapsed since you were last enrolled in an academic institution.

3.      Academic awards, prizes, honors, fellowships or other distinctions you have received.

4.      Work experience or activities pertinent to your graduate goals.

5.      If pertinent to your proposed field of study, please list your publications and any scholarly or professional organizations in which you hold membershi

This information must be completed by all applicants for admission and submitted with the application. Please type or print clearly. Please note that the Personal History Statement should not duplicate the Statement of Purpose. In an essay, discuss how your personal background informs your decision to pursue a graduate degree.

VI. additional requirements for international students

Required Academic Records from Foreign Applicants

All official academic records must be issued in the original language and accompanied by English translations prepared by the issuing institution. Specially prepared English versions are not acceptable in place of documents issued in the original language. If translations are not available from the institution itself, they may be prepared by government or official translators. For translations to be acceptable, they must bear the stamp or seal of the issuing institution or governmental agency and the original signature of the translator. They must be complete and exact word-for-word translations of the original documents, not interpretations. Grades must not be converted to a US scale. Records submitted for review may not be borrowed, photocopied, returned to you or sent elsewhere.

Academic records must show the dates of your enrollment, all subjects or courses, units, credits or hours, and grades in each subject. If rank is determined by the results of comprehensive examinations, records should show the examination date and your scores, rank, class and division. All records must include a complete description of institutional grading scales or other standards of evaluation with maximum grades and minimum marks indicated. If official academic records issued by your institution do not list the courses or subjects studied in preparation for comprehensive examinations or identify the topics on which you were examined, you should prepare one copy of course descriptions or lists of lectures, seminars, or laboratory periods attended during the academic year. Wherever possible you should include hours per week devoted to each subject and marks earned in the subject. Such course descriptions or lists should be certified as complete and accurate by a university official or the supervisor of your studies.

You must also submit official evidence of the conferral of all degrees, diplomas or professional titles and the date of the formal conferral (month and year). These certificates should indicate the exact name of the degree, diploma, or title as it is known in the country of origin and not in US terms. If you are applying before the end of your final year of study, send a supplementary record showing completion of all remaining coursework and evidence of the degree as soon as it is available.

Special Requirements for applicants from People's Republic of China

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree requiring four years of university study. Records: (1) Academic records, including a degree certificate, in Chinese accompanied by a complete English translation listing all courses and grades. Grades should not be converted to a US scale All records and translations must bear the original red stamp or seal of the issuing institution and the signature in ink of the appropriate university official. Photocopies of the official stamp or seal are not acceptable. Records must be received directly from the Chinese institution. Records submitted by the applicant will be considered unofficial.

Financial Verification and Visa Procedures

U.S. immigration law requires that international applicants, if admitted, show documented evidence that sufficient funds to cover all fees, transportation, and living expenses are available for the first year of their studies at UCR and that a sponsor is committed to their financial support beyond this date. This must be proved before a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS2019) for a visa can be issued.

Total required fees and expenses are estimated at US$37,872.50* per calendar year (this figure is subject to change). This amount is for the student alone. This estimate includes $25,368.50 for fees for three quarters and $12,504 for basic living expenses for the nine month academic year only. Married students must verify an additional US$3,500 if accompanied by a spouse and another US$3,000 for a child; each additional dependent requires US$3,000. Opportunities for university financial assistance are limited. The University will NOT issue a certificate of eligibility (Form I-20 or DS2019) unless you provide the Graduate Division with evidence of your ability to pay all required fees and expenses for the duration of your program. In some cases, American embassies and consulates will not grant you a student visa unless you can provide proof of adequate funding for the entire stay.

This exam must be taken within two years of the time you intend to enroll at UCR. The minimum acceptable scores are: 550 for the the written exam; 213 for the computer-based exam, and 80 for the internet-based exam (iBT).
