You will be better equipped to climb the next rung on your career ladder and make reaching the top of your profession a realistic goal.

Degree Requirements

The MSF Programs consist of 10 core MSF courses and up to 4.5 prerequisite courses, depending on your academic background. Students with an appropriate academic background in business may waive  any or all of the prerequisite courses. All students are reviewed for waiver status during the application review process and, upon admission, are notified directly from the MSF Programs office on their prerequisite standing. Students unsure of their standing are encouraged to contact the program office for a prerequisite standing review. For descriptions of the below courses, contact the MSF Programs Office.

ü   (March 15 for those interested in financial aid)

ü   November 1 - Spring Semester /Quarter

ü   April 1 - Summer Semester

III. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

Our graduate programs are geared toward highly qualified professionals and committed individuals. To be admitted, you must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

The average GPA for most programs is 3.0. This average varies slightly among programs. These scores are only one component of the credentials used to make admission decisions, and are evaluated in the context of the applicant’s complete application.

ü   What if I do not have a background in business?
If you do not have a prior undergraduate or graduate degree in business, our program requires that you enroll in prerequisite courses that help provide you with the foundation that will ultimately help you succeed in the more in depth finance coursework.

ü   What courses can I get waived? How many courses can I have reviewed for waivers?
The MS in Finance Programs grants waivers for equivalent coursework taken in the 7-years, prior to admission, with a grade of B or better.   Specifically we look for an academic background in economics, accounting, finance & statistics. If you’ve taken these courses, and meet our guidelines, then you are eligible to waive the corresponding prerequisite.  All students must minimally complete 30-credits to earn a graduate degree from the Sawyer Business School .  If you would like your unofficial transcripts evaluated, contact the MSF Associate Director, Caitlin Ryan at cryan@suffolk.edu.

ü   How much work experience is required for the Sawyer Business School graduate programs?
The College of Arts and Sciences has no requirement for work experience prior to admission. The work experience required for the Sawyer Business School differs from program to program. The GDPA, MPA, and MHA programs have no work experience requirement. The Global MBA program strongly recommends at least 3 years of work experience, and the Executive MBA requires at least 7 years of experience, preferably in a leadership role. The MBA program prefers students who have at least 1 year full time work experience or the equivalent thereof. One year of post-baccalaureate, full-time work experience is recommended for all graduate programs. Work experience can teach things that no university can, and make the student better prepared to think critically about how what they learn can be applied. Internships, co-op placements, and military experience all count towards the work history requirement.

ü   What are the minimum test scores for English?
TOEFL (paper-based) 550
(computer-based) 213
(IBT) 80, each subscore on the test must be at least 17
IELTS 6.5, each subscore must be at least 6.0

ü   What are the minimum test scores for the other standardized tests?
Suffolk University
does not have minimum test scores for standardized tests and uses a variety of tools to assess the candidacy of an applicant. Test scores are only one of these tools. The average test scores for each test are listed below. Based on the competitiveness of a program, test scores for each program may be significantly higher than the scores listed here.
GRE 500
MAT (old scoring system) 46
(new scoring system) 396
GMAT 500-540
LSAT 157

IV. Process & Mailing Address

1.          Complete online application

2.          Application for admission with a $50 nonrefundable application fee

3.          Statement of professional goals indicating how a degree from the MS in Finance programs will help you achieve your goals

4.          Current resume

5.          Two letters of recommendation from past or present academic or professional colleagues
Is there a specific form for recommendations? A specific format? Suffolk University has no specific form for recommendations. Letterhead is preferred, but not required. Suffolk University does not accept faxed or emailed recommendations. Recommendations should come directly to the admissions office from the person writing the recommendation, but the graduate admissions office will accept the recommendation from an applicant if it is in a sealed envelope with the signature of the person giving the recommendation across the back flap.
The letter should be a balanced assessment of both the prospective student’s suitability for the program as well as the suitability for Suffolk University . Contact information must be provided for the person giving the reference, especially if the reference is not on letterhead. Suffolk University may contact references, and therefore requires that information.
Applicants should remind recommenders to include an applicant’s full legal name in the letter, in order to ensure that a letter of recommendation may be included in the correct application package.

6.          Official transcripts of all prior academic work and proof of completion of the undergraduate degree. Coursework from one institution reported as transfer credit on another school’s transcript does not constitute an official record. Failure to submit a transcript from each institution attended will delay consideration of the application. Transcripts should be sent directly by the reporting institution to the Office of Graduate Admission; however, a sealed official copy submitted by the candidate is also acceptable. Current seniors must submit a final transcript indicating the degree(s) earned by the first day of classes.

7.          An official GMAT score

8.          International students must also submit TOEFL scores. Suffolk University’s Code for ETS test scores is 3771. Sawyer Business School should use department code 02-Graduate Schools of Management, regardless of program.

10.      Photocopy of passport identification page

Please Note: An interview with the director of the MS in Finance is the final step in the admission process. Following are general guidelines regarding the comparability of degrees from selected countries:
