Columbia University --- Master of Science in Actuarial Science *(精算保險碩士)

I.       Program description

The Department of Statistics, in conjunction with the School of Continuing Education , offers an M.S. in Actuarial Science. The program grounds students in the theory and methods used by actuaries at the same time that it prepares them to take SOA Exams P, FM, MLC, MFE, and C, and CAS Exams 1–4. The core curriculum includes courses in economics and finance, statistical methods, and actuarial science. Students earn Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) credit in economics, corporate finance, and applied statistical methods. Advanced students may take electives in mathematical finance, risk management, and advanced statistical methods. The program is appropriate for students with strong academic records in mathematics, statistics, and economics. Students enroll full-time or part-time; full-time students complete the program in three semesters. The Department of Statistics will assist students not employed in the field in locating internship opportunities.

Prerequisites

Students must have a knowledge of elementary economics (equivalent to ECON W1105), linear algebra (MATH V2010), and multivariate calculus (MATH V1202).

Does it matter that I took the math and economics prerequisites a long time ago?

No, that is fine. Depending on how long ago you completed your prerequisites, you may be asked to take a placement test as part of the application for admission and, if need be, you may be asked to do additional coursework before enrolling in the program.

I have an undergraduate degree in statistics and my colleague has a degree in economics. Will we be expected to take all of the courses in the core?

Students may be exempted from SIEO W4105, SIEO W4107, ECON W3211, and ECON W3212 if equivalent courses have been taken prior to enrollment in the program. Students may be exempted from STAT W4440 and BUSI W3003 if equivalent courses have been taken prior to enrollment in the program and the equivalent courses satisfy the Society of Actuaries requirements for Validation by Educational Experience (VEE). Students may be exempted from ACTU 4840 if they have passed exam FM/2. Under no circumstances will students be exempted from ACTU K4820 and ACTU K4825. The academic advisor grants exemptions based on a transcript review and results on placement examinations, administered when necessary. Students may be exempted from no more than two required courses without replacing those courses with approved electives.

Will Columbia provide test preparation courses?

Columbia has an actuarial club. In addition, the University will facilitate the
