Choosing the Genetic Traits of a Child

God creates life perfectly. Every creature is a unique treasure on the Earth. However, people are not satisfied with God’s masterpieces and try to modify them. Geneticists have devoted themselves to solving the mysteries of genes for hundred of years. So far, some genetic traits have been successfully connected to specific parts of genes. People should expoit this achievement to choose the genetic traits of a child and enjoy the convenience of biotechnology.

Genetic traits should be chosen and people should have children they prefer. In the past, parents could not choose the gender of their children. However, gender was a great issue in conservative Chinese families. My father fathered seven children because he wanted a boy. My mother had had to be continually pregnant until having a boy. It was also unfair for me. In my childhood, my mother always told me that I was redundant. My brother had everything, but I had nothing. Every child was a treasure, but I was not. I was "born from a stone", as the Chinese said. My parents were envious of others whose first child was a boy. I was envious of others who had a close family. In my family, everyone was envious of other families.

If genetic traits were chosen, parents would be more satisfied with their children, and the children would be happier. However, critics seem never to suffer from my experience and claim that people will face the consequences of choosing genetic traits. They are worried that a man might not be able to find a woman to marry in the future because of gender selection. In my opinion, the world is dynamic. If the number of boys exceeds a certain amount, parents will desire girls.

Biotechnology provides parents with a chance to choose the genetic traits of a child. It is not harmful. It helps parents get children they love. Family relationships will become closer.
