ISLAND HERMITAGE "Polgasduwa"
near DODANDUWA 5 kms south of Hikkaduwa and 104 kms south of Colombo.
POLGASDUWA ISLAND HERMITAGE is a Theravada Buddhist monastery in the Forest Monk tradition. It was founded in 1911 by Venerable Nyânatiloka, the first Theravada Buddhist monk of German origin. Since then, it has been a place of quiet meditation, study and meeting for Buddhists and people interested in Buddhism. To maintain this atmosphere, it is necessary to write in advance and receive a written invitation in order to visit the island. If space allows (since monks have priority), it is possible to stay on the Island (for males only) to study Buddhism or practice meditation. Candidates for ordination will receive special consideration.

A) by air mail from overseas with 2 "international reply coupons" 6 weeks in advance, or
B) from Sri Lanka with a stamped self-addressed envelope 8 days in advance.
Please include the following information:
1.) name, address, age, sex, occupation, nationality
2.) name(s),age(s),sex,occupation(s),nationalities of any companion(s)
3.) intended arrival (in general, your intended date will be approved, but for safety include alternatives)
4.) intended departure
5.) religious affiliation
6.) purpose of visit
The invitation will tell how to reach the boat pick-up point, the time of pick-up, and any other necessary information. Only persons with invitations will be picked up by the boat and arrival by any other boat is not allowed.
This information replaces all former information of a similar kind.
Information in travel guides and tourist pamphlets is not accurate.
To preserve the Forest Monk tradition, only persons with personal invitations arriving by Hermitage boats will be allowed to visit Polgasduwa.
Some important clues:
CLOTHES (even for short visits):Do not wear bright - colored "hippy", or flashy clothes. Your body should be properly covered to visit a MONASTERY.
Greeting of monks: fold your hands in front of your chest and bow. This is a common greetings even among laypeople in many Asian countries.
To bring for overnight stays:
*) sheet, or blanket, or sleepingbag,
*) White "upâsaka"-clothings: white longsleeved shirt and white sarong (or long white trousers)
*)Torch with spare-batteries
*) umbrella
*) alarm-clock
*) passport with valid visa
*) mosquito-repellent
*) personal articles
