--M. Poppy Hutagalung (1941- ),

Ciliwung Morning
--M. Poppy Hutagalung (1941- )

Two hands clasped together
a young mother’s, a wide-eyed girl’s
two pair of shining eyes
watching and being watched by the water
on the bare bank down to the Ciliwung*
one morning

playful hands, playful eyes greeting
my brown Ciliwung
turbid, holding a threat of grief
with the thousands of allegiances sworn
the thousands of loves, disappointments and longings
given to your peaceful course
does there lie within you a secret
my brown Ciliwung
each time we meet
a question is put to your darkened face
some day we will be free of your gaze
the washers will have found a more suitable place
the bathers will have found a more appropriate place
and no more men squatting here
showing their backs to the passers-by
all will have found a more suitable place

two hands together
gaily descending the bank to the river
a young mother, a wide-eyed girl
swimming as if mermaids in their royal pool
is there hope in the humble wish
one thousand gleaming sedans to the right and left
is not this moment’s dream
the dream of dew-like drops of water
drops like glass
the water quaffed on joyous days
refreshment for the work-laden soul
two hands together
their laughter comes in swells
so it is, throughout the seasons both wet and dry
their feet cross the road
leaving
going home
while calmly the Ciliwung flows.

* The Ciliwung, a river cutting through the city of Jakarta, is infamous for its pollution and the tenement shacks lining its banks.

Ciliwung Pagi
--M. Poppy Hutagalung

sepasang tangan berkaitan
ibu muda, dan bocah perempuan belum tahu apa
dua pasang mata bercahaya
menatap dan tertatap air
di tangga ciliwung yang telanjang
suatu pagi

lincah tangan, lincah mata menyapa
ciliwungku coklat
padat mengancam duka,
adakah padamu rahasia terbenam

sepasang tangan berkaitan
ria menuruni tangga kali
ibu muda dan bocah perempuan belum tahu apa
berenang bagai duyung di kerajaannya
adakah kesangsian pada harapnya yang sederhana
beribu kemerlap sedan di kiri kanannya
bukanlah mimpinya saat ini
mimpinya adalah tetes-tetes air bagai embun
bagai kaca
bagai air yang direguk hari-hari penuh nikmat
menyegarkan tubuhnya yang sarat kerja
sepasang tangan berkaitan
derai tawanya alun tersibak
begitu, hari-hari sepanjang musim panas dan hujan
kakinya memintas jalan itu
pergi
pulang
dan ciliwung tetap mengalir tenang
