【聊16】 〈題目〉Put on the Foot ｛開講｝ N : Nonsense! 聊王，你說， isn't it sheer nonsense? D : 什麼 matter 嘛，有時候 no sense 就是 good sense, 知道嗎？ O : 我們剛才 talked about 貴重的 instruments. D : 又 dear 又 heavy 的 instruments嗎? 是 musical instruments 囉？像 piano 或 tuba 或 cello 之類嗎？ O : 只是 expensive 而已，不見得 heavy. 但不是鋼琴、低音大喇叭、低音大提琴 and so on, so forth 的 musical instruments, 而是各種 experimental 用的 instruments. N : He was referring to 昂貴的 experimental equipment, 像 electron microscope, spectroscope, and the like 的東西。那叫 apparatuses, 是吧？ D : 說 apparatus 或 apparatuses 都可以， either will do. 因為那個字的 plural 也可以不 加 “-es”. N : 我說電子顯微鏡、分光儀之類的 equipment, 我們 call them especially “apparatuses”, 不是嗎？ O : 好啦，就說 physical 或 chemical 或 biological 的 apparatus 或 apparatuses 好啦，怎 麼說都一樣。 D : 如果 all the same, 就應該稱它們為 physico-chemico-biological apparatus 或 apparatuses. O : I said 「都一樣」是 intended to mean 「都一樣不可以如此 squander money, 不可 以 waste money away like that」。 D : 喔？誰在 squandering 或 wasting away money on 什麼 apparatuses 呀？ N : 他說，有人 bought a set of 貴儀，結果沒有真正 set it up for use, 只是放在 lab 裡， 讓人家來 visit 時，誇獎說 “Well for you! With such dear equipment!” O : Didn't I say the truth? 那些 apparatus 有時候是 as dear as 幾百幾千萬，可是他們 卻 do not hold them dear, 只是隨便 put them by their feet 罷了。 N : 那些 apparatuses 有 equipped with 腳嗎？如果有，他們就是 put them on their feet, 就是讓它們 stand there ready to-- O : Well, to be sure, 它們就是屹立在那裡 ready to rust 或 ready to be robbed of, 不 是 ready for use 或 ready to be used. D : Well, may be. 我是聽說有 that thing. 他們把儀器放在腳邊生銹或被偷，要不然只 有 hinder their feet 而妨礙 their experiment 罷了。 N : 我不信。 That's incredible! 有 conscience 的人 wouldn't do that. O : 但他們就是沒有 conscience. They are without conscience. They have no good conscience. 所以--- D : 所以他們也沒有 clear conscience, 不會想到要 make good use of 那些 equipment 或 apparatus. N : 其實，有啦，他們常常就在那裡 make the best use of them, 所以--- O : 所以 they lose consciousness of their own feet 嗎？ D : Well, may be. 一個人站在儀器旁邊太久以後，自己的 feet 就會 get numbed, 而 當 the feet are numb 時，人就會失去 consciousness of 自己的腳，可能只看到那些 儀器 standing there on their feet 而已。 O : 好 devoted 的科學家呀！但 as far as I know, 有不少 scientists, 他們只知道 the science of wealth, 不知道 the science of health. 他們在已經 numb, 已經 lost consciousness of their feet 時，他們還記得 money, 還 quite conscious of how much they have, 還想買 dear apparatuses, 想透過 buying--- N : Stop! 不要 disparage! 不要 libel! 責罵與毀謗都要有根據。 O : There! There! 請兩位 do calm down. 我知道你的 ox 脾氣，你不會故意去 slander anybody. 至於你這位 Mr. Nonesuch, 我也相信你的 attitude of “no-such-things”. 我們不說 scientists, O.K.? 我們還是 chat on our English 好嗎？ N : 要談 what? 談好人常常 liable to libel 易受毀謗嗎? O : 談 liberty of speech言論自由? 或 liberal in mind 心胸開闊? D : 我來談一個 light matter, 一件跟 feet 有關的 funny stuff. N : Funny? 多 funny? 你要說真正有腳的「粉絲」 fans, 踢到通常沒腳的 「風 扇」 fans, 結果他們的 feet 統統 bleed 嗎？ O : Stuff? 什麼 stuff? 你要說某公司有幾個 staff, 買了一些 food stuffs, 沒想到突然跑來 好多 feet, 結果大家 tread on 那些 stuffs, 而那些 staff 就沒有 stuffs 可以 feed on, 是 嗎？ D : 不，不。我講的是以前國中 English textbooks 的第四冊 Lesson 9, 那一課 is entitled “It Looks Like an Old One”. N : 什麼 looks like an old one? 儀器嗎？ D : 一本 dictionary, 它從 bookshelf 上面掉了下來，所以看起來像舊的，已經 worth not so much. O : So what? 字典是買來 sell 的嗎？或買來 look old or new 的嗎？ D : 那是書商的 bookshelf, 他要賣那 dictionary, 可是掉下來被 damaged 之後，還 hurt 到那老板的 foot, 真是 unlucky. N : 結果呢？ And the result? D : 那個 boss 非常 frugal 或 thrifty。他太太叫他去 see a doctor, 他不要。他說隔天有 個 doctor 就會來 fetch 他 ordered 的那本字典。他可以 let the doctor look at his foot by the way. O : 結果呢？ And the result? D : 結果那個 doctor 來了，幫他看了 the hurt foot, 還幫他開了一個 prescription, 叫他 去買 medicine, 然後交代說： “Put the medicine on your foot three times a day”。 O : How funny! 買藥來放在腳上？ 光是 put on the foot 而已，不擦也不 rub? 不用也 不 apply? 一天放三次 on the foot 有用嗎？ The hurt foot 會 heal 嗎？ N : 真是 funny! 那又何必 buy? 何必 purchase? D : 那不是 the doctor 的 fault, 而是教科書 the editors 的錯。國中教科書的 editors 有 個 belief, 其實是個 delusion, 是個 wrong idea. O : What idea? How wrong? D : 他們認為初中學生的英文 vocabulary 應該僅限於幾百字，不到一千字，只能用 最 simple 最 frequently-used 的字，所以只能在 textbook 中用 “put”, 不能 用 “rub” 或 “apply” 這種 words. N : 所以那 doctor 原本 English 很好，卻故意把 rub 改成 put 嗎？ D : 不是那 doctor 改的，是那 editors 改的，而 funny 的就是： It seems 這醫生 在 making fun of 這位老板的 frugal thrift 或 thrifty frugality, 在嘲弄，在 mocking at 他的節節儉儉。 O : 結果呢？ N : And the result? D : 結果腳有沒有 healed 課文裡並沒有說到。倒是那個醫師 charged 五百塊看診費。 N : 怎麼 charge? 他不是順便幫人家 look at 一下而已嗎？ D : 醫生問他 ordered 的 dictionary 值多少，那 boss 說那字典雖然 fell down, 價值卻沒 有跟著 fall down, 它一樣 fit for any consultation, 所以還是要 charge 五百元。 O : 結果 the doctor 就說他的 clinical fees 也是 five hundred NT, 是嗎？ D : Exactly. 他還 added: 「到我的 clinic 來看病，只需三百， 我到 client 家來看病， 就需要 five hundred 了。」 N : 那 boss 能夠 accept 嗎？ D : 不 accept, 也得 accept. 因為那本書已經 fell down, 雖然沒有 fell into pieces, 卻 somehow 有點 damaged, 雖然是 still fit for consultation, 卻不會有人願意 pay high for 那種 damaged book. N : 那老板一定很 repent, 會 regret having consulted the doctor. O : 那 doctor 回家也會 repent, 會 regret having bought a damaged dictionary. D : In my opinion, 不見得。科學家買那麼 dear 的 instruments 或 apparatuses, 不管有沒 有 of any use, 好像從來也沒 repent 過，不是嗎？ O : No, never. N : Yes, they often do! D : 不管 yes or no, 他們也常常把 medicine 放在 foot 上面， 就 comfort 自己說 “Now, I am healing every minute”，不是嗎？ O : Yes, 他們還說：”Now, I have a better footing to make money”。 N : No, 他們只會說： “Now, I have a better footing to make high marks”. D : 不管 yes or no, 我的 footing，我的立場就是：我們不要 quarrel。現在我宣 佈： The time is up！ 我的 foot 也要 up, 大家一起去 get some food stuffs, 一起 去 feed on something 吧！
